It's recess! Today was the third day of the June Holiday Remediation Programme. I felt just like in school. (Except that the the school hours were slightly shortened.) The good news was that there were 6 periods of Mother Tongue today. Hooray, I love Mother Tongue lesson! Oh, where was I? Oh yes, let's continue.

Some stalls in the canteen were closed. Apparently, the stallholders didn't want to drag their lazy bodies to school for just half an hour of business. I don't blame them for that. I was buying a drink and a bun when suddenly I was informed to see Miss Sharon Toh, who was standing outside the canteen. Snowden led me to her. She told me that there was a competition today. A Maths competition. And we needed to go out of school now, to participte in it. Besides me, Snowden, Matthew, Li Yin, Ling Yun and Fauzan also needed to go. Ling Yun seemed quite happy about it. He told me that he loved skipping classes(with great excuses)! After all, this WAS a great excuse!

I was a little dissapointed that I had to skip Mother Tongue lesson. There were still 2 periods left! Oh well, guess I don't have a choice but to go. I'll still get a certificate anyway! Ling Yun and I ran up to class to pack our bags. When we were done with that, we ran down to meet Miss Sharon Toh. When we saw her, she was talking on her mobile phone. When the call ended, she suddenly annouced that we don't need to go for the competition. "Why?" I asked curiously. She explained that the competition was a 60 min paper. It had already started. By the time we reached the place, the test would have already ended. (It was called "Maths Talent Quest" by the way.) I had mixed emotions: Elated and Dissapointed.

Elated, because I wouldn't have to miss any lessons. Disappointed, because I waved bye-bye to my certificate! Ling Yun said that he didn't mind at all. I agreed with him too. What's there to be sad about when there are still 2 periods of Mother Tongue lesson? We suddenly realised that recess haven't ended. Both of us started heading to our class to put down our heavy bags. On the way, we met some friends like Jeremy and Jonathan. They asked the same question, "Where are both of you going with your bags?" Ling Yun and I just smiled and say that we tried to play truant and cut class. We told them that we were climbing over the school gates when we were stopped by one of the school guards. We were going to see our principal after we put our bags. Lol... Nice joke, don't you think so? And guess if they believed what we had said?

Of course they didn't. Haha... Remind me to ask them to laugh tomorrow! :P

Science Notes On Chemistry: Mixtures

Most of the natural substances around us, such as sea water and the air, are mixtures. A mixture is a combination of different substances that can be separated because they have different physical properties - such as different boiling points.

What's In A Mixture?

Some mixtures contain two or more elements (substances made up of only one type of atom). Some mixtures contain two or more different compounds. A compound is a substance that is made up of different atoms bonded together. Other mixtures contain elements and compounds. Air is a mixture if elements that includes oxygen, and compounds such as carbon dioxide and soot.

Types Of Mixture

A mixture can be any combination of solids, liquids and gases. For instance, air is a mixture of gases, and sea water is a mixture of salt (a solid) and water (a liquid). A mixture of a solid dissolved in a liquid, such as salt in water, is called a solution. The liquid is called a solvent and the solid is called the solute. A solid that dissolves easily is said to be soluble, while a solid that will not dissolve is insoluble.

A mixture of solid particles floating in a liquid or a gas is called a suspension. Blood, milk and smoke are suspensions.

Mixing Liquids

Liquids that mix easily, such as water and ink, are called miscible liquids. Liquids that do not mix easily, such as oil and water, are said to be immiscible. However, they can be made to mix by adding an emulsifier. An emulsifier makes a liquid, such as oil, break up into minute droplets in another, such as water. The resulting liquid is called an emulsion.

Fizzy drinks are a mixture of two liquids (water and flavouring) and a gas (carbon dioxide). The gas makes the fizzy bubbles. Also, mayonnaise is an emulsion of oil and vinegar. The emulsifier is egg yolk.

Today was the 1.6 km run and it was a bad day for me. Not that I'm not fit enough to run, but I was very, very unlucky during the test. The test should start from 3.15 pm and end at 4.30 pm according to the form. But that was not my case. 6 Orchid ran first and they started late at about 4.00 pm. In the end, 6 Sunflower ran at about 4.15 pm. I was running as fast as I could, trying to maintain a constant speed although I felt as if I was about to collaspe. When I saw that I had completed the 7 th round, I was quite relieved. I ran to take the sash from my partner. It was the final round for me. It's time to RUN LIKE THE WIND!!!

Although I was extremely exhausted, I perservered. Wing Yan and Haiqal was ahead of me during that time. (Quite a big distance!) I switched to Turbo and dashed after them. At about 3/4 of the round, Haiqal was overtaken by me. Now, it's time to overtake Wing Yan. I was hot on her heels. In the last few seconds... YES!!! I won!!! I ran past the teacher that took our timing. Wing Yan was behind me. I went back to the teacher, who was now taking her timing. And... WTF?!? I lost to her?!? This was outrageous! I had overtaken her clearly, but I got a worse position?!? CURSES... >_<

To make matters worse, Haiqal's position was better that mine. He got 14 while I got a 15. I had clearly overtaken him! He was feigning arrogance although he knew that he had not truly won me, he said, "All that matter's is that I won you!" What an ignorant fellow. It was just not my day...

After that, I was asked to take the timings of the people in another class. Went home very late, at about 5.45 pm! Damn, I hate this test. It's just NOT FAIR!

Notes on Acid Rain

Description

The term acid rain also known as acid precipitation is commonly used to mean the deposition of acidic components in rain, snow, dew, or dry particles. Acid rain occurs when sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are emitted into the atmosphere, undergo chemical transformations and are absorbed by water droplets in clouds. The droplets then fall to earth as rain, snow, mist, dry dust, hail, or sleet. This increases the acidity of the soil, and affects the chemical balance of lakes and streams. The term "acid rain" is sometimes used more generally to include all forms of acid deposition — both wet deposition and dry deposition.

Acid rain accelerates weathering in carbonate rocks and accelerates building weathering. It also contributes to acidification of rivers, streams, and forest damage at high elevations. When the acid builds up in rivers and streams it can kill fish.

Emissions Of Chemicals Leading To Acidification

Natural Phenomena:

The principal natural phenomena that contribute acid-producing gases to the atmosphere are emissions from volcanoes and those from biological processes that occur on the land, in wetlands, and in the oceans. The effects of acidic deposits have been detected in glacial ice thousands of years old in remote parts of the globe.

Human Gas:

The principal cause of acid rain is sulfuric and nitrogen compounds from human sources, such as electricity generation, factories and motor vehicles. The gases can be carried hundreds of miles in the atmosphere before they are converted to acids and deposited.

Acid Deposition

Wet Deposition:

Wet deposition of acids occurs when any form of precipitation (rain, snow, etc) removes acids from the atmosphere and delivers it to the Earth's surface. This can result from the deposition of acids produced in the raindrops or by the precipitation removing the acids either in clouds or below clouds. Wet removal of both gases and aerosol are both of importance for wet deposition.

Dry Deposition:

Acid deposition also occurs via dry deposition in the absence of precipitation. This can be responsible for as much as 20 to 60% of total acid deposition. This occurs when particles and gases stick to the ground, plants or other surfaces.

Negative Impacts On The Environment

Acid rain has been shown to have adverse impacts on forests, freshwaters and soils, killing off insect and aquatic lifeforms as well as causing damage to buildings and having possible impacts on human health.

Surface Waters And Aquatic Animals:

Both the lower pH and higher aluminium concentrations in surface water that occur as a result of acid rain can cause damage to fish and other aquatic animals. At pHs lower than 5 most fish eggs will not hatch and lower pHs can kill adult fish. As lakes become more acidic, biodiversity is reduced.

Soils:

Soil biology can be seriously damaged by acid rain. Some tropical microbes can quickly consume acids[13] but other microbes are unable to tolerate low pHs and are killed. The enzymes of these microbes are denatured (changed in shape so they no longer function) by the acid. The hydronium ions of acid rain also mobilize toxins and leach away essential nutrients and minerals.

Forests And Other Vegetation:

Acid rain can slow the growth of forests, cause leaves and needles to turn brown and fall off and die. In extreme cases trees or whole areas of forest can die. The death of trees is not usually a direct result of acid rain, often it weakens trees and makes them more susceptible to other threats. Damage to soils (see above) can also cause problems. High altitude forests are especially vulnerable as they are often surrounded by clouds and fog which are more acidic than rain.

Other plants can also be damaged by acid rain but the effect on food crops is minimized by the application of fertilizers to replace lost nutrients. In cultivated areas, limestone may also be added to increase the ability of the soil to keep the pH stable, but this tactic is largely unusable in the case of wilderness lands. Acid rain depletes minerals from the soil and then it stunts the growth of the plant.

Human Health:

Some scientists have suggested direct links to human health, but none have been proven. However, fine particles, a large fraction of which are formed from the same gases as acid rain (sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide), have been shown to cause illness and premature deaths such as cancer and other deadly diseases.

Other Effects:

Acid rain can also cause damage to certain building materials and historical monuments. Acid rain can cause weathering on ancient and valuable statues and has caused considerable damage. This is because the sulfuric acid in the rain chemically reacts with the calcium compounds in the stones (limestone, sandstone, marble and granite) to create gypsum, which then flakes off. This is also commonly seen on old gravestones where the acid rain can cause the inscription to become completely illegible. Acid rain also causes an increased rate of oxidation for iron.

Finally, SA1 is over. Here are my results in percentage:

English: 90% (Yes! A new record! This proves that 6 Sunflower has beaten 6 Tulip for this subject. I'm elated! Actually, the paper was quite easy. Just 1 mark to an A*...)

Chinese: 93.3% (Hmm... Wonder what's up with the .3? Anyway, I'm happy that I've got an A*!)
Higher Chinese: 93% (Quite satisfied. I got second in class position for Mother Tongue.)

Science: 92.5% (Could be better. A few mistakes here and there. But they won't stop me from achieving better results next time. A mistake to me is one step closer to success! :D)

Mathematics: 92% (Wow, there were lots of changes to this score. At first I got 1 extra mark, which makes it 93%, but then later, there was another marking error, so it was back to the original.)

Overall, I'm quite happy. I scored almost an A* for all subjects! :P
My hard work had paid off!!!

It's been a while since I posted. Sorry, busy preparing for the coming SA1 Examinations. :P Anyway, today was the Mathematics Examination. Section A and B were very easy. Not many challenging questions. Same goes for Section C, except for the last question, which proved to be quite challenging. I still solved it and I will rate it as a 7 points question on a scale from 1 to 10. Algebra was pathetic. There was only one question in the first section. Mr Chua was right. It did not even take up 4% of the questions. ;)

Anyway, I got back Section B for my English paper. Did not expect the results to come out so fast! The score was 58.5 (Out of 65) But there were some marking errors. For example, I accidentally used the wrong tense but the marker did not do anything. Did I tell? Of course I did! (Honesty is the best policy!) One more answer I gave was marked wrong, but this is yet to be confirmed. (Mrs Lim said that there is a possibility that I may gain an extra 1 mark.) There was also Question 37 and 40. There was a big error with the setter. Two answers must be used to get ther correct one. But each words can only be used once! So as long as we wrote the answer in either blank, we will obtain the marks. Compensation, I must say. (:

Oh, and I got 46/50 for my Chinese oral, 37.5/40 for Normal Chinese Composition and lastly, 18/20 for my Chinese Listening Exam. I'm quite satisfied.

Oh, please note that I may not post in the next few days. (You know the reason.) I will announce my results once everything is done! :D

Below is a hilarious poem by yours truly:

Humpty DUMBty sat on the wall,
Humpty DUMBty had a great fall.
Humpty DUMBty then called...
"I'm gonna have a ball!"
Humpty DUMBty plunged down the wall,
Humpty DUMBty then know...
All the king's horses and all the king's men,
Never wanted to put him back again.
Humpty DUMBty suddenly brawled...
"I'm gonna go SPLAT on the wall!"

We are so sad that he is dead...
Because of his oversized head...
We are traumatized by his demise,
Because he wasn't very wise...

*Funeral Music*

That was the end of him. Let's have one minute of silence...
He was a good egg.

What are your feelings about Mas Selamat Kastari's escape from detention centre?
I'm confident that the Singapore Authorities will round him up soon.
The Singapore Government has done a good job of keeping the country safe thus far. It's no big deal.
I think he will try to get in touch with other Jemaah Islamiah leaders and escape.
Huh? What are you talking about? Who is Mas Selamat Kastari?
